Sandcastle
4955 Nokomis Parkway West
Phone: None yet, stay tuned
Website: sandcastlempls.com
Status: Opens at 11 a.m. today
In less than an hour, Sandcastle—the much-awaited new concession stand at Lake Nokomis—will officially open. And in the continuing trend of haute concessions (think Kim Bartmann's Bread & Pickle at Lake Harriet), this is no mere popcorn and hot dog stand (though Sandcastle has those, too).
Executive chef and co-owner Doug Flicker is best known as the chef and co-owner of South Minneapolis's Piccolo, and the menu includes a wealth of Piccolo-tinged dishes like shrimp and octopus ceviche, watermelon salad with pickled radishes and chevre, an American Indian fry bread sandwich with bison, a sweet pea falafel, and the Dog Flicker (get it?), a beef frank with kimchee, cilantro, and a fried egg. Plus beer, wine, and sweets like the Monkey Bar (a chocolate-dipped organic banana with pine nut brittle).
Sandcastle will typically be open from April 15 through October 15 every year (it opened later this year due to construction). Until Labor Day, hours are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for "grab and go" and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for full service, every day. All seating is outside.
