Welcome to our photo series Eater Scenes, where Eater photographer Katie Cannon visits some of the city's great restaurants to capture them at a certain, and very specific, point in the day. Today, Travail's brand-new North Minneapolis pop-up, Umami.
Last night, the much-anticipated Umami opened to a sold-out crowd. Why sold-out and not fully booked? Because the North Minneapolis pop-up restaurant comes from the guys behind Robbinsdale's envelope-pushing Travail, and they're doing things a little differently. The $40 tickets to the pop-up go on sale in two week batches online; the current batch (running through Saturday, September 28) is already sold out.
Photographer Katie Cannon arrived at 5:30, just after the first ticketholders had taken their seats. The space is full of Travail touches—the handpainted cherry blossom mural, the chalkboard menus, and, of course, the Travailians themselves (you can spot Mike Brown, Bob Gerken, James Winberg, and Kale Thome plating and serving). Check out the opening night scene by clicking on the photo above.
