Last week, Hector Ruiz—the chef behind Café Ena, Rincón 38, and the much-mourned El Mesón—quietly opened a new restaurant, La Fresca, in Tangletown. The menu, which is billed as "nouveau Mexican cuisine," is divided into primeros, segundos, and terceros. The largest section of the menu, primeros, features Mexican small plates ranging from the more familiar quesadillas and sopes to a variety of Mayan dishes: papadzules (sauteed corn tortilla with diced hard-boiled eggs and crema de pepita), panuchos (black-bean stuffed tortilla with cochinita pibil), and salbutes (fried corn tortilla with chicken barbacoa). The segundos and terceros include soups, salads, and entrees like pumpkin seed-crusted salmon with roasted poblano pepper.
La Fresca is open every day, from 4-9 p.m. Sunday through Thurday and 4-10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. They plan on adding lunch hours in the future.
