Downtown restaurant Union Fish Market is shuttering temporarily while it undergoes a renovation and a re-envisioning by none other than contentious Twin Cities chef Stewart Woodman. Mega restaurant group Kaskaid Hospitality (owner of Union, Union Fish Market, CRAVE, BoneYard, and Figlio, among others) recently announced that Woodman would be joining them as culinary director. At last check-in, Woodman was embroiled in a lawsuit from the ex-employees at his shuttered restaurants, Heidi's and Birdhouse on Hennepin. In more positive credentials, Woodman has twice been named a semifinalist for a James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef Midwest.
Kaskaid launched the restaurant-within-a-restaurant Union Fish Market concept in September of last year. According to a quote from Kam Talebi, founder and CEO of Kaskaid Hospitality, in the press release, Kaskaid still "felt strongly" about the concept, but felt that Woodman's "vision for this new direction represents a fantastic opportunity that we simply could not pass up." Union Rooftop will stay open during Union Fish Market's remodel.
