Public Kitchen + Bar, the new lunch and dinner spot open overlooking Mears Park, will open for business today beginning at 5 p.m. The lifelong realization of a dream for owner Carol March, the split-level layout inside this historic building, designed by Wilkus Architects, will host guests initially for happy hour and dinner before expanding to lunch and brunch service as the business gets rolling.
The menu from chef Greg Johnson is filled with dishes familiar to any American palate served with an upscale twist, making the restaurant straightforward and approachable as a neighborhood restaurant while still being appropriate for date night. The business-class manner with which the menu is prepared fits Johnson's history of working at the now-defunct Palomino, but there are hints of the creative fine-dining flair he served when working for Jack Riebel at The Dakota and the original incarnation of Blackbird.
Cocktails are variations on the classics, like orange-tinged take on the old fashioned that will be available both at the upstairs tin-topped bar facing several flat-screen TV's or downstairs by the plush upholstery in the speakeasy-style lounge. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, opening an hour earlier to accommodate brunch crowds. The lounge opens at 4 p.m. daily with its own menu of small plates.
