The diner at the corner of Dale and University was an extension of Union Gospel Mission that employed graduates of its program move from addition and home insecurity to employment. Unfortunately, after opening in early 2013, those who operated the restaurant discovered the sad fact that operating an eatery is a costly endeavor.
Last night on the diner's Facebook page, operators wrote: "Our Daily Bread vocational training program was one of several education and training programs at the Mission focused on helping our clients to become self-sustaining. Unfortunately, the model of operating a fully-functioning restaurant proved to be cost prohibitive relative to the overall number of clients we were able to train."
