In an unprecedented move, the just-opened just/us, a collaborative restaurant on 7th in downtown St. Paul is switching its menu for burgers from February 26 through March 10. Burger lunch is being served today through Saturday, 10 am to 3 pm with a side of puns, like the Gouda Morning Sunshine for $8. Just/us is the just-opened restaurant in the former Red Lantern location at 465 Wabasha Street that is run by a chef collaborative. The restaurant is so new that the liquor license still hasn’t been sorted out. So, no beer with the burgers, but other refreshers are available.
- Cochon 555 is heading back to the Twin Cities. The prestigious culinary competition with the tony ticket price pits 5 chefs against one and other to see who can prepare the best tasting menu from a small, family farm-raised pig. This year’s competitors are Tim Fischer of Loews/Cosmos, Daniel del Prado of Martina, Karyn Tomlinson of Corner Table, Russell Klein of Meritage and Remy Pettus of Bardo. Past winners include Thomas Boemer of Corner Table/Revival who went on to win the national competition and Jorge Guzman of the now shuttered Brewer’s Table at Surly. The event is Sunday March 25 at Loews Minneapolis Hotel in downtown. (Full disclosure, I’m one of the judges.) Check out past year’s action here.
- Downtown Minneapolis’ skyway is getting a new poke-dedicated spot at 811 LaSalle. Aloha Poke is the Chicago-based chain that is opening its first Minnesota outpost on Thursday. Poke is the raw tuna salad that originated in Hawaii and has since become a mainland trend.
- Hot Indian Foods continues its growth towards total world domination by way of Indi-frites. The food truck started by owner Amol Dixit with chef Janene Holig has announced that its next location will be in the North food court at the Mall of America. This joins the food truck, a stand at Midtown Global Market, and a forthcoming skyway location in downtown Minneapolis.
