After a brief closure due to a fire in the roofline of restaurant, Young Joni re-opens in Northeast Minneapolis tonight. “We cannot thank the community enough for the outpouring of love and support during this challenging time,” said owner and recently minted James Beard Award semifinalist Ann Kim. According to a report in the Star Tribune, the accidental fire started in the brick pizza oven’s chimney piping assembly.
Last night the back bar, Young Joni’s speakeasy re-opened, serving drinks and pizza to fans waiting to welcome the restaurant back. Tonight the restaurant will open for the first time , normal business hours.
Young Joni is the third restaurant from chef Ann Kim and her Vestalia Hospitality group. Opened in the winter of 2016, the restaurant which utilizes fire to cook many of its menu items in addition to its award-winning pizzas, quickly rose to national prominence. Eater’s Bill Addison named it a Best New Restaurant of 2017 and earned Kim a James Beard nomination in 2018.
