After 16 years of intimate date nights, long lunches, and fresh Mediterranean flavors, the Sander family has decided to close Kafe 421 after dinner on July 31. The restaurant was a labor of love for Georgia Sander, whose emigrated from Greece as a teenager. Her daughter Antigoni Sander joined her mother in running the business and both are familiar faces to restaurant regulars. The restaurant has long been a destination for those who work at the nearby University of Minnesota. Plus, it’s affordable date night specials and romantic setting made it a popular place to linger over a meal and glass of wine.
Antigoni said the difficult decision was made as the family heads into a new era. Sander and her husband just welcomed a new baby and her mother has been excelling in the grandma department. “It was just time for the family to start a new chapter.”
Fans of Georgia’s food won’t have to do completely without, she will continue to run a catering operation out of the location.
