On Sunday, September 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. fairgoers can sample indigenous food from across the U.S. thanks to indigenous chefs courtesy of the Sioux Chef, a group (and soon-to-be kitchen) dedicated to revitalizing and reclaiming native North American, pre-colonization cuisine. The event is free with fair admission
The full-day event will include several chef demonstrations as well as information on the history, cultural significance, and culinary and medicinal uses of the foods as well as preservation techniques to stretch out the goodness as long as possible. Chef Sean Sherman, co-author of The Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen cookbook, which commanded a prestigious James Beard Award, will conduct a demonstration himself as well as discuss indigenous food systems with the audience.
There will also be a backdrop of traditional drumming, singing, and dancing of Minnesota tribes, so come for the food and stay for the enveloping cultural experience unlike anything else at the sprawling fair.
