View as Map

Whether you call it aquavit, akvavit, or akevitt, this herbed, spiced Scandinavian liquor is making a comeback, especially here in the Twin Cities, epicenter of all things Nordic. Derived from the Latin aqua vitae ("water of life"), this usually yellow-ish spirit is typically infused with some combination of caraway, cardamom, cumin, anise, fennel, and lemon or orange peel.

With multiple Midwest distilleries now crafting their own aquavit—from Minnesota's own Gamle Ode to Illinois's North Shore—bartenders have begun mixing drinks to match. So, without further ado, here are 9 awesome aquavit cocktails to try right now in the Twin Cities.
