It makes sense that the ideal version of a neighborhood butcher shop would know how to grind a perfect burger blend. The beauty comes from Lowry Hill Meats owner, Erik Sather, long a chef in some of the top restaurants in the Twin Cities. He puts his considerable talents into building an idealized burger from the cow onward. Served a brioche bun and topped with a slice of American cheese, it’s enough to make the heavens open up and burger angels sing.

2. Petite León

This relatively new restaurant is a collective of well-known industry folks, including chef Jorge Guzman, who does not mess around when it comes to a burger. Le Peite Cheeseburger is double stacked with caramelized onions, pickled cucumbers, saucy goods, on a buttery bun.

The now iconic smash burger (two patties smashed gently on a griddle, served cradling a simple American cheese slice between them) kicked off a trend and the burger landscape of the Twin Cities hasn't been the same since we had our first bite: packed with beef flavor and a generous amount of unctuousness. It’s every bit as good at the original location, as it is at the St. Paul spot.

The Revival restaurants are known for fried chicken, but the St. Paul location also does barbecue. And then somehow both also serve a serious burger. It’s buttery, rich business tucked onto a toasted bun and oozing with melted cheese.

Depending on the story told, this former speakeasy might be the originator of the cheese-stuffed burger known as the Juicy Lucy. In the many years since, the restaurant has perfected the giant stuffed burger art. It's an absolute monster.

This ( also possibly) original cheese stuffed burger is pure simplicity. American cheese inside two thin patties cooked upon a grill seasoned by years of pure beef for a flavor-dense charred exterior. The bun is simple, squishy, unobtrusive. The molten cheese is seriously hot and contained until that first oozy bite.

This ode to simplicity is exactly what an exhausted line cook might want after a long shift: juicy meat and melted cheese square on a quality bun.
