No matter how you spell it, or where you believe it came from, the ju(i)cy Lucy is the burger gift Minneapolis has bestowed upon America. A beefy patty cradles a molten cheese center, where one glorious dish becomes a bite of glory. The cheese variety, burger toppings, and size are where these restaurants get to take creative license. Here’s where to order the greatest hits of the cheese-stuffed burgers.

Where to Eat the Twin Cities Iconic Juicy Lucy
A superior burger puts the cheese inside

1. Hell's Kitchen Inc.
Minneapolis, MN 55402
Hell’s Kitchen is a subterranean restaurant in downtown Minneapolis that has always done things with a healthy disdain for ho-hum. The Juicy Lucifer (because: hell) is a black angus patty stuffed with cheese, but amping up the flavor is a side of pepper jelly.

2. 5-8 Club
Minneapolis, MN 55417
The 5-8 Club opened in 1928 as a speakeasy and became a full-fledged restaurant when Prohibition ended. They started serving, and as legend would have it, invented the conventionally spelled Juicy Lucy in the 1950’s. Here lives a glory of variety and generosity of portions. Order all kinds of cheese and other fillings, including a breakfast Lucy.

3. Matt's Bar
Minneapolis, MN 55407
One of two restaurants in Minneapolis that lay claim to creating the cheese-stuffed burger, and spell this dish “jucy lucy.” This offering has a slimmer menu and a somewhat smaller size of burger, but is imminently satisfying molten center that stays unbelievably hot. Even if you don’t fear the cheese, something of that temperature looking to cling to tender tastebuds should at the very least be respected. After ordering, wait. Eat some fries. The cheese requires a settling.

4. Peppers and Fries
Minneapolis, MN 55406
This Longfellow neighborhood is a beloved spot for burgers, with plenty of spicy food and fries - as the name implies. Peppers & Fries jump into the cheese-inside burger game with the Peppers Juicy with American cheese and topped with American cheese, which makes for an incredibly rich bite of beefy goodness.

5. Blue Door Pub Longfellow
Minneapolis, MN 55406
The Blue Door Pub cleverly named its cheese-stuffed burger the blucy when the first location opened, with a blue door, in 2008. While that original location shuttered this year, the Longfellow and Como Avenue locations live on to serve a variety of creatively stuffed burgers. Order online.

6. Groveland Tap
Saint Paul, MN 55105
This Mac Groveland neighborhood pub is popular with college kids and families from the neighborhood. What is quite possibly the best bite on the menu is a spicy take on the stuffed burger: the Cajun Lucy. Ample pepper jack cheese and jalepeños fit inside the well-cooked burgers with surprising ease.

7. Casper & Runyon's Nook
Saint Paul, MN 55116
The Nook calls its stuffed burger offerings the Juicy Nookie. These are mondo bites of big burger flavor stuffed with cheese offered in various flavor combinations, and in part a reason this restaurant and bar has become a neighborhood institution. Order online for carry out from the original location or Shamrock’s on West 7th.

9. Pillbox Tavern
St Paul, MN 55102
This downtown St. Paul pub has a serious selection of hearty dishes that pair best with an ice cold beer. Chef Graham Messenger takes his burgers seriously and this selection has to include a stuffed lucy. Aim for a hunger-busting classic, where the meat gets a good sear on the grill and the overflowing, melty cheese oozes over the edge of the bun once the meaty seal is broken.
