Donut Hut keeps it classic with glazed raised, sugared cakes, old fashioneds, Long Johns, Bavarian creams, and apple fritters, all baked fresh every day. Tucked into a Little Canada strip mall, this place has a true mom-and-pop feel, and it’s budget-friendly, a good place to buy a dozen (or two). Get here early, as Donut Hut often sells out on weekend mornings.

Soga Mochi Donut

Tucked into Dragon Star Oriental Foods in St. Paul, Soga Mochi Donut serves a unique hybrid treat. These mochi doughnuts are circular, shaped almost like beads on a bracelet — they’re made chewy and bouncy by the addition of glutinous rice flour, and aren’t too sweet (in the best way). Flavors like matcha, toasted coconut, yaro, and yuzu change week to week.

The Donut Trap at Rosedale Center

These signature square-shaped raised doughnuts feature offbeat toppings and clever names, from the Fruity Pebbles-topped Gay 90s to the Girl Luv Beyonce, made with a dark chocolate cherry amaretto. Many of them are also available as cake doughnuts (half of which are vegan). Find the Donut Trap at local farmers markets during the summer and at doughnut vending machine locations at Rosedale Center, the Updown Arcade Bar, both MSP airport terminals, Indeed brewery, and Blackstack Brewing.

Heights Bakery

Heights Bakery is a no-frills mom-and-pop bakery on Central Avenue. The cake doughnuts are a highlight, but don’t overlook the raised glazed ones, a specialty here. Local favorites include the moist, doughy apple fritters, chocolate-banana glazed doughnuts, and blueberry Bismarcks. Height’s Bakery is budget-friendly, too.

Cardigan Donuts

Cardigan Donuts has two downtown Minneapolis locations, at City Center and in the IDS building. Each serves decadent doughnut takes: Think cake doughnuts drizzled with a coffee glaze, Bismarks stuffed with a malted vanilla cream filling, and old fashioned doughnuts made moist and dense with Greek yogurt mixed into the batter. The IDS location also serves doughnut ice cream sandwiches and doughnut blendees (doughnuts mixed into ice cream).

Panaderia San Miguel

San Miguel serves tantalizing, rice pudding-stuffed doughnuts. The chewy dough and rich pudding make for excellent combo: This doughnut is delicately sweet, a little heavy in the hand, and more filling than your average mid-day treat. Pair it with a fresh churro or concha to go.

If you’re on the hunt for something extra indulgent, make it a doughnut sundae with a swirl of soft-serve ice cream.

Sift Gluten Free

YoYo Donuts

Minnetonka’s YoYo Donuts has a local cult following — this spot does all the classics, but it specializes in fun, outside-the-box doughnuts like S’mores, raspberry glazed, and orange cream. The raised doughnut dough is a carefully developed blend of flours and spices, made without preservatives or extenders: It’s airy, chewy, and not overly sweet. YoYo’s ice cream pints are super popular too, and the whole bakery is peanut and tree nut-free.

Puffy Cream Donuts Plus

True to its name, Puffy Cream Donuts specializes in raised doughnuts dusted with sugar and filled to bursting with with feather-light vanilla and chocolate creams. There are plenty of classic doughnuts on offer here too, from crackly old fashioneds to apple fritters.
