It's impossible to get closer to the source of your food than eating it directly on the farm. Pair that gorgeous produce with cheese and put it on a toasty bit of crust and that is a recipe for a heavenly summer night. Minnesota and Wisconsin are dotted with quaint little red barned farms, and some are opening their gates to the public. Most ask that you pack in everything: plates, utensils, jelly jars and maybe a little wine or a growler of beer.

Just over the river in Prescott, Wisconsin, this tiny farm serves pizza every other Friday evening from 5 to 8:00 p.m. until late October. Borner Farm sells highly seasonal pizzas as well as farm-fresh appetizers, seasonal desserts, and beverages including beer and wine. Want to take matters into your own hands? There are also all-day courses in building brick pizza ovens for $80 per person.

Tucked into the bluffs above the Mississippi River, the 16-acre farm holds its Pizza Nights Fridays from 4 to 8:30 p.m. from May through September, as well as Thursdays from June to August. This being Wisconsin, diners cannot bring their own booze, but the farm has an impressive selection of Wisconsin craft beer, sodas and wine.Plus, there are cookies, ice-cream novelties and kits for making s'mores around the fire pit and even a little playground. There's also a heated barn for when the weather doesn't quite cooperate.
