The 22nd Annual Art-A-Whirl presented by NEMAA (Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association) kicks off tonight and there's so much to see and do and eat. The event itself is an open studio tour that invites guests to check out art and connect with artists but has also become a destination for eating, drinking, and checking out live music. Here now, in geographical order, is our guide to some of the best spots to eat and drink while being immersed in art and music at this year's Art-A-Whirl weekend.
Indeed's annual Whirlygig has all the things. A huge music stage with killer bands all weekend long, Blue Door blucys and totchos, Natedogs quality wieners, and of course Indeed beer including the brand new B-Side pilsner and Lucy session sour. Take note, it's a cash only event and you should kindly leave your doggies at home.
The Liquid Zoo at Bauhaus is one of the most popular events of the weekend. The music line up is insane but the food options are even more dazzling. All three days there will be food from Revival and Parlour, other food trucks including the Centro pop-up event via The Wyn 65 food truck (Saturday only) serving Mexican street food, and all those Bauhaus lagers and such to drink.
Young Joni is is kicking off Art-A-Whirl with a Friday only event in their parking lot. There will be music, dancing, craft cocktails, boozy slushies, and a special Korean-inspired BBQ brat with kimchi.
Anchor Fish & Chips is doing it up for Art-A-Whirl once again with a tent party on Saturday and Sunday. There will be lots of live music but more importantly a beer tent and their famous fish and chips.
331 Club and The Sheridan Room will have a major music line up both indoors and outdoors all weekend long. Surly will be the featured brewery once again and food provided by The Sheridan Room plus vegan goodies of The Herbivorous Butcher.
Grumpys NE is holding their Art-A-Whirl party all day Saturday with live music starting at noon and ending with Har Mar Superstar that evening. NorthGate Brewing will be releasing a cream ale, Jameson Irish Whiskey will be in full force, and they will be breaking out the Red Bull slushie machine.
Psycho Suzi's Art-A-Whirl party is Saturday and kicks off with a puppy fashion show. No cover charge to enjoy the bands and dance party with DJ Jake Rudh. There will be coconut drinks, state fair inspired food, beer trucks, and tiki drinks for days.
Fair State Brewing Cooperative is having an Arty Party with emphasis to the visual arts. Food options are super local with baked goods from Aki's and brats from Gerhard's. Plus all the fantastic beers that Fair State is producing. It's a family-friendly event until 9pm.
Over at the The Broadway building, 612 is holding their Art-A-Whirl event. There will be a ton of bands all weekend long, a pop-up tattoo shop, and food from trucks Vito Lucco, Heavy Metal Grill, Simply Steves, and more. Bring cash and leave the dogs at home. And if you have a bag, it is subject to search.
Dangerous Man is holding their Saturday only NE Beer Garden event with craft beer, food trucks, and a live music stage. Food trucks Bark N Bite, Hot Indian, Wyn 65, and O'Cheeze will be on site plus late night food options from Sasquatch Sandwiches.
The Sample Room is having a tent party on Friday and Saturday with live music and tons to eat and drink. There will be a BBQ grill with pulled pork, chicken, and hot dogs plus beer from Able, spiked lemonade, and wine. Their regular menu is available inside and on the patio overlooking the Mississippi River.
The Food Building is going to be packed with local art and artists. They'll also have some live music and treats from Baker's Field Flour & Bread and Red Table Meat. Also, Draft Horse (also in the Food Building) is now serving Sunday brunch.
While at Indeed's Whirlygig, bop up to the third floor and check out the Chowgirls Lounge at Art-A-Whirl. There's going to be a ton of curated goods (art, jewelry, clothing, stationery) all from local artists. Take a break from beer with Chowgirls cocktails (classic manhattan or their signature rhubarbarita) and snack on a local-and-organic twist on the retro TV dinner.
Able has a slightly different take on on how to whirl with the addition of a skate park among all the art. For food, you've got beer battered everything at Brooks High food truck, Red River Kitchen food truck, gourmet iced lollies from Frio Frio, super sexy doughnuts from Sssdude Nutz, and beers from Able including a specialty "Skate-A-Whirl" draft release and event-only beer infusions.
